Mr Brown was appointed Deputy Secretary in March 2016, having acted in the position since September 2015. Prior to that, he was First Assistant Secretary, Office of Trade Negotiations.
From 2008 to 2011, he was Australia’s High Commissioner to Canada. He has also served as Deputy Head of the Australian Mission to the European Union in Brussels, and Consul General in Los Angeles. He undertook an earlier posting to Denmark.
In Canberra, Mr Brown has held senior positions including First Assistant Secretary, Consular and Crisis Management Division, Head of the Secretariat for the Review of Export Policies and Programs, Head of the Asia Trade Taskforce and Ambassador for the Environment. He has also held positions dealing with trade law and disputes, services trade negotiations and bilateral relations with the Americas and Europe.
Mr Brown holds a Bachelor of Economics degree from the University of New England.
