Ambassador for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)

Mr Brendan Berne


Mr Berne is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and is currently Ambassador for APEC and First Assistant Secretary, Trade and Economic Policy Division. Prior to his current appointments, he served as Assistant Secretary, Investment and Economy Branch and was Minister and Deputy Head of Mission, in the Australian Embassy, Seoul (2011-14).

Mr Berne also served as the Assistant Secretary, Asia-Pacific Cooperation (APEC) Branch, DFAT (2010-2011), and Executive Director, Government and Industry Relations, Export Finance and Insurance Corporation (EFIC) (2008-2009). From 2005-2008 Mr Berne was Deputy Permanent Representative, Australian Delegation to the OEDC in Paris.

Prior to joining DFAT, Mr Berne was Manager Economist, Overseas Economics, Economic Group at the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Mr Berne was educated at Macquarie University, where he received a Bachelor of Economics (First Class Honours); and Australian National University, where he received a Master of Economics, Reserve Bank of Australia Full Staff Scholarship.
