Protocol services

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade values the presence of over 4,500 members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps and hopes that all members of the corps, officers and dependants alike, will have a rewarding and enjoyable posting in Australia.

The Department's Protocol Branch is committed to providing high quality and efficient services to the foreign official community. This guide, written by the Branch to explain Australian protocol procedures and practice, is intended for the staff of diplomatic missions and consular posts in Australia. The advice provided herein is not exhaustive, nor does it commit the Australian Government in any way. The Branch welcomes and encourages open communication with missions and posts to assist close cooperation in general and the resolution of specific issues. Australia takes very seriously its responsibilities under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (VCDR) and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations (VCCR), including its responsibilities for protecting the premises and staff of missions and their right to free communication with their home governments. Missions are welcome to raise concerns about security with Protocol Branch at any time.
