Australian Engagement with Developing Countries

4 June 2018

Total Official Support for Sustainable Development

This report, Australian Engagement with Developing Countries – Bilateral Relationships at a Glance, presents a series of fact sheets detailing Australia's engagement with developing countries not limited to the official sector. It includes country and regional profiles with information on aid, trade and investment, tourism, labour movement, tertiary education and diaspora communities.

At present there is no international framework for reporting detailed Official Sustainable Support. The framework presented in this publication has been developed within DFAT incorporating (where known) aspects of the DAC's Total Official Support for Sustainable Development (TOSSD). The DFAT framework has been developed to track the different types of engagement including private sector leveraging; bilateral and strategic policy engagement; and peace and security.

Changes in this issue

The 2016-17 issue has undergone a redesign process and now presents further detailed data. The Australian overview provides an at a glance summary of our worldwide engagement with developing countries. This includes key Australian social and economic indicators for international comparisons with developing countries (e.g. population, life expectancy and Gross National Income). The overview includes the top 10 recipients of Australian engagement, our investment priorities with developing countries and a vignette highlighting our gender work.

New key social and economic indicators provided as part of the Australia summary have been included to provide international comparisons in areas such as the UN Human Development index, population and life expectancy. Student information is further disaggregated reflecting total students from a developing country and enrolments by level of education. A vignette is included providing key country program highlights.

Further information

Other Official Flows estimates for periods prior to those shown in this publication are available from the Time Series spreadsheets located on the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website.

The Time Series spreadsheets enable users to tabulate, manipulate and analyse Australian engagement data over time.
