Education and Business Experts join the Australia-China Council Board

Foreign Minister Bob Carr today announced the appointments of Professor Stephanie Fahey and Mr David Olsson as members of the Australia-China Council Board.

Professor Stephanie Fahey is currently a Lead Partner for Education in Oceania for Ernst and Young, and until recently was a Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) at Monash University. Mr Olsson is a senior partner in the Beijing office of international law firm King & Wood Mallesons. He is the current Chairman of the China-Australia Chamber of Commerce in Beijing (AustCham).

Professor Fahey and Mr Olsson join the Council Board at a time of rapidly expanding bilateral engagement between Australia and its largest trading partner across all sectors of economy and society. Professor Fahey and Mr Olsson bring to the Board an outstanding track-record in advancing Australia-China education and business ties and diverse range of skills and experience to effectively contribute to the work of the Council.

Launch of 'Beyond the Cables: Australian Ambassadors to China 1972-2012 Oral History Project'

On 11 December 2012, The Australia-China Council and National Library of Australia officially launched 'Beyond the Cables: Australian Ambassadors to China 1972-2012' Oral History Project at the National Library.

The project is a joint initiative of the Council and the Library, which will produce extended 'whole-of-life' interviews with Australia's former and current Ambassadors to China.

The project is a part of the program to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of diplomatic relations with China.

Dr Craig Emerson, Minister for Trade and Competitiveness and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Asian Century Policy and Senator the Hon Chris Evans, Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research announced the appointment of Professor David Walker as inaugural BHP Billiton Chair of Australian Studies at Peking University.

Former Ambassador Dr Stephen FitzGerald AO on Gough Whitlam's historic 1971 visit to China

Australia's first Ambassador to the People's Republic of China Dr Stephen FitzGerald AO has published anessay The Coup that Laid the Fear of China in which he provides a unique account of Whitlam's historic visit to China in 1971.

The paper is a part of the Whitlam Institute's project Gough Whitlam and the road to establishing formal relations with the People's Republic of China: the significance for contemporary Australian-Chinese relations supported by the Australia-China Council.

Australia-China Council is featured in the Australia-China Quarterly

The Australia-China Council’s submission to the Asian Century White Paper, Australian Studies Program and BHP Billiton Chair of Australia Studies initiative were featured in the 2dn edition of the Australia-China Quarterly Magazine published by the Australia-China Business Council.

The Council is strengthening its Education programs with the new focus on Asia literacy and development of new champions of the bilateral relationship.

Successful grant recipients

The Australia-China Council is pleased to announce the successful recipients of the 2012-2013 competitive grants. Congratulations to all organisations and individuals who have been awarded funding.

Australia-China Council Delegation to China in July 2012

The delegation of the Australia-China Council successfully concluded a biannual visit to Chengdu and Beijing on 6-15 July 2012.

The delegation was led by ACC Chair, the Hon Warwick Smith AM and included ACC Deputy Chair, Mr Kevin Hobgood-Brown and Board member, Mr Chris Clark.

Australia-China Council Board Meeting June 2012

The Australia-China Council held a Board Meeting in Canberra on 22 June 2012. The Board discussed and agreed on the priorities of the Council for 2012-2013.

In the course of the meeting, ACC Board met with the Hon Dr Craig Emerson MP, Minister for Trade and Competitiveness and His Excellency Mr Chen Yuming, China's Ambassador to Australia.
