April 2016 Aid for trade seminar, Singapore

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) held a regional Asia-focused aid for trade seminar in Singapore on 21-22 April 2016.

DFAT program managers and private sector experts, such as development banks and representatives from other donors participated.  Stakeholders and development partners included: the World Bank; World Vision, United Nations Commission for International Trade Law; the Export Council of Australia, Standards Australia, the APEC Secretariat, Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Germany's GIZ, Impact Investment Exchange Asia and the Asian Trade Centre.  Adrian Lochrin, Australia's Deputy High Commissioner in Singapore, opened the seminar.

The seminar, was undertaken to ensure the quality of aid for trade investments are maintained into the future, including boosting their potential impact and value for money.  It was also designed to encourage innovative thinking among program managers, in terms of broadening the scope of aid of trade investments, identifying new approaches to financing and making new connections for future collaboration and partnership.

The discussions at the seminar included the fundamentals of aid for trade (including its contribution to economic growth of developing countries, and monitoring and evaluation), identification of investment gaps (such as in modernisation of standards and commercial law), consideration of new approaches (including on financing and incorporating gender), and knowledge-sharing between participants.  The program for the seminar, including the presentations can be accessed below.
