Mr McDonald joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) as a Deputy Secretary in November 2013 following the integration of DFAT and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). He commenced at AusAID as Deputy Director General in 2011.
From 2008, Mr McDonald was a Deputy Secretary in the former Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). He was responsible for corporate matters, the State network and leading the team created to establish DEEWR as a new department. Before taking up his Deputy Secretary position, Mr McDonald undertook senior management roles in education covering policy, program and corporate.
Mr McDonald commenced his career in the Victorian Public Service in 1978. He worked in a range of departments on various policy and program matters.
Mr McDonald was born in Victoria and holds a Bachelor of Business from Deakin University.
