Australia is committed to supporting Bhutan's human resource development through our scholarships program and through building capacity of Bhutanese institutions. Education is the central pillar of the bilateral aid program.

DFAT will manage an estimated $2.1 million in bilateral funding to Bhutan in 2017-18. Total Australian Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Bhutan in 2017-18 will be an estimated $9.2 million.

Australia's support to Bhutan focuses on developing human resource capacity, building people-to-people linkages and strengthening tertiary institutions. Scholarships for study in Australia are our focus for development cooperation with Bhutan.

Results to December 2016

  • Provided 520 Bhutanese students with Australia Awards scholarships for tertiary education in Australia since 2007.
  • Since 2011, 324 alumni (126 women and 198 men) have completed Masters or Doctoral level studies in Australia.
