DFAT will manage an estimated $2.1 million in bilateral funding to Bhutan in 2016-17. Total Australian Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Bhutan in 2016-17 will be an estimated $7.3 million.
Australian ODA to Bhutan will focus on human development through scholarships.
Australia’s support to Bhutan focuses on developing human resource capacity, building people-to-people linkages and strengthening tertiary institutions. Scholarships for study in Australia are our focus for development cooperation with Bhutan.
Education assistance in Bhutan
Results to June 2015
- Provided 590 Bhutanese students with Australia Awards scholarships for tertiary education in Australia since 2007.
- Contributed to Net Primary Enrolment Ratio rising to 95.2 per cent in 2015 from 88 per cent in 2008, as well as improved gender parity, through our support to the World Food Program.
- Provided 4500 students with two meals a day in 2015 through our support to the World Food Program.
- Supported 92 Bhutanese students to obtain Australian Masters degrees in-country from the Royal Institute of Management, Thimphu, including in Business Administration, Business Management, Public Administration and Management.
