Memorandum of Understanding
On Cooperation between the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba ("the Parties").
- Interested in further developing the relations of friendship and cooperation between both countries;
- Observing the principles of the United Nations Charter and the rule of international law;
- In the interest of developing practical measures to enhance cooperation and mutual contacts between the Parties,
Have reached the following understandings:
Both Parties will enhance political consultations through visits, where possible, by respective Ministers of Foreign Affairs to each other’s country and through meetings and consultations by Deputy Ministers and other senior officials on issues of common interest. The dates, venues and agendas of these visits, meetings and consultations will be settled through diplomatic channels.
The Parties will, directly or through their diplomatic missions, inform each other about important domestic and foreign policy issues relating to their respective countries.
The diplomatic missions of the Parties in third countries will intensify their mutual contacts and exchange of information.
The Permanent Representatives of both Parties to the United Nations Organization, as well as to other international organizations, will maintain regular contact and, if need be, consult on issues of common interest.
In accordance with their international obligations, the Parties will facilitate the activities of the diplomatic mission of the other Party aimed at developing bilateral relations and fostering mutual understanding between both countries.
The Parties will explore opportunities for enhanced cooperation and exchanges between each country in fields of mutual interest such as science, culture, sport and commerce, as well as the development, as appropriate, of further arrangements to support such activities.
Both Parties will bear their own travel expenses for visits, meetings and consultations by their officials in the implementation of this Memorandum.
This Memorandum of Understanding will come into effect on the date of its signature and it will have a duration of two years. It will be renewed automatically for the same period unless either Party gives notice in writing of its intention to terminate the Memorandum. Such termination would take effect three months after the receipt of the notice in writing.
Signed in duplicate in ................on the ...............................day of ................ in the year 2009 in English and Spanish, with both texts being equally valid.
