Djibouti

Djibouti is a small country on the northeast coast of the Horn of Africa with a strategic location as a deep-water port. Situated at the intersection of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, its economy is based on providing services as a regional and international shipping port and refuelling centre. Djibouti also hosts French and US military bases.

Djibouti is a major centre for international efforts to combat piracy off the coast of Somalia. Australia is a long-time contributor to counter-piracy efforts, including contributions of naval assets, secondments of personnel and engagement in a number of international fora that seek to combat piracy.

At an altitude of 155 metres below sea level, Djibouti's Lake Assal in the Danakil Desert is the lowest point on land in Africa.

Australia's diplomatic representation to Djibouti is from the High Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, assisted by an Honorary Consul in the capital, Djibouti City.
