The Republic of Mauritius, an Indian Ocean island state, has developed into a regional hub for financial services and a business gateway to Africa. Mauritius was the top-ranked African country in the 2016 World Bank Ease of Doing Business Report. It was also ranked as Africa's most competitive economy in the World Economic Forum's report for 2015-16, having risen over twenty places in seven years.

The population of Mauritius is approximately 1.3 million (2013). Ninety per cent speak Mauritian Creole although both English and French are commonly used. At 30,000 (2011), Australia is home to the largest Mauritian diaspora outside Mauritius. It is a member of the Commonwealth and teh Southern African Development Community. Both the Indian Ocean Rim Association and the Indian Ocean Commission have their headquarters in Mauritius.

Australia maintains a High Commission in Port Louis, Mauritius. Mauritius is represented in Australia by a High Commission in Canberra while Mauritius has three Honorary Consuls in Australia, based in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.
