Australia Awards in Nauru

Overview

Each year a number of Nauruans take up scholarships to study abroad at selected Pacific regional institutions through the Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships program. In addition, a small number of Nauruans take up scholarships to study at selected Australian institutions through the Australia Awards Scholarships program. A total of 18 scholarships were offered in 2016-17.

To date, the scholarship program has produced very positive results, especially in the development of the public service with scholarship graduates taking on roles in the government in areas such as nursing, law and justice, business management and accounting.

Profile: Barina Waqa

Photo: Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Barina Waqa is the Secretary for Multi-Cultural Affairs with the Department of Justice and Border Control in Nauru. In 2006, Ms Waqa received an Australian Regional Development Scholarship through the Australia Awards for Development to complete a Bachelor of Law degree at the University of the South Pacific in Vanuatu.

Ms Waqa is Nauru’s first female lawyer and was formerly the Principle Legal Officer with the Department of Justice and Border Control. This role has allowed Barina to encourage other girls and women to follow their career dreams, even in times of adversity.
