Senegal

Senegal's capital city – Dakar is the furthest western point of Africa. Senegal remains one of the continent's most stable democracies and has a long history of participating in international peacekeeping and regional mediation. A former French colony, its official language is French.

Major commodities include peanuts, petrol, fish, phosphates and cotton and while unemployment is high and poverty remains widespread, the country has one of the region's most stable economies. In 2013 Senegal's GDP rose by 3.8% and it is expected to continue to grow to 4.9% beyond 2014 (however the negative impacts of the Ebola outbreak in the region have yet to be calculated).

Australia is represented in Senegal through our High Commission in Ghana, and Senegal is accredited to Australia through its Embassy in Tokyo.

Senegal is a founding member of the West African Economic Community (ECOWAS).
