Timor Sea Maritime Arrangements
Australia and Timor-Leste have three treaties between them that govern maritime arrangements in the Timor Sea. The treaty regime sets aside questions of maritime boundaries and jurisdiction to allow for exploration and exploitation of petroleum resources in the Joint Petroleum Development Area, as well as revenue sharing arrangements for the benefit of both countries.
In 2016 Timor-Leste requested a Conciliation Commission under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea to conciliate differences with Australia on maritime boundaries in the Timor Sea.
