Tom Connor has been Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo since January 2013, having served previously at the Embassy as Political Counsellor from June 2003 to May 2006. He was Assistant Secretary of the Indonesia, Regional Issues and East Timor Branch of Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) from October 2011 to December 2012, following his return to Australia on completion of a posting as Consul-General in Shanghai from July 2008 to October 2011. Prior to that assignment Mr Connor was Assistant Secretary of the North East Asia Branch of DFAT, responsible for Australia's relations with Japan, the ROK and the DPRK, from May 2006 to June 2008. He was the speechwriter to both Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Australia's Minister for Trade from 1998 to 2001. Mr Connor joined DFAT in February 1984 and previously served as Consul at the Australian Consulate-General in Shanghai (1988-90), Director of the Australia-Korea Foundation (1991-92), Political Counsellor at the Australian Embassy in Beijing (1993-97) and Director of DFAT's China Section (1997-98).
Mr Connor holds Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law degrees from the Australian National University, a Master of Business Administration from Deakin University and a Master of Laws (International Law) from the Australian National University. He was admitted as Barrister of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1986. He is married and has two sons.
