The Council of Ministers (COM) is IORA's peak decision-making body that brings together Foreign Ministers from Member States to discuss policy and agree on future strategic directions.
The 16th annual Council of Ministers meeting (COMM) and related meetings was held in Bali, Indonesia between 22 and 27 October 2016.
During the meetings, Ministers and senior officials discussed preparations for the IORA Commemorative Leaders' Summit to mark IORA's 20th anniversary and IORA's six priority issues of maritime safety and security, trade and investment facilitation, fisheries management, disaster risk management, academic, science and technology cooperation, and tourism and cultural exchange, as well as the cross-cutting issues of women's empowerment and the blue economy
Key outcomes included:
- Adoption of the Bali Communiqué [PDF].
- Adoption of the Declaration on Gender Equality and Women's Economic Empowerment [PDF].
- Tanzania became the 10th signatory to the IORA Search and Rescue Memorandum. The Memorandum's signatories are now Australia, Bangladesh, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania and Thailand.
- Somalia signed the IORA Charter, completing the formalities for its accession as IORA's newest and 21st member.
