Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI)

Australia warmly congratulates the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand on its endorsement of the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) in November 2012. Thailand is the 102nd state to endorse the PSI Statement of Interdiction Principles. This development represents an important step forward for the PSI, and for international efforts in combatting the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction-related goods and technology, which continues to pose a threat to global peace and security. Australia looks forward to working closely with Thailand, particularly as we move towards commemorating the 10th anniversary of the founding of the PSI.

The Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) provides the international community with the practical means of cooperating to prevent illicit trafficking in weapons of mass destruction (WMD), their delivery systems and related materials. It aims to impede illicit WMD-related trade to and from states of proliferation concern and terrorist groups. The PSI is supported by more than 100 countries. The core objectives of the PSI are contained in a Statement of Interdiction Principles (SIP) to which all supporting countries publicly commit. Australia is working with other PSI partners to raise awareness of, and expand support for, the PSI in the Asia-Pacific region.
