Fifth Round of Negotiations

The fifth round of Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) negotiations was held in Canberra on 20-21 May. Negotiations were divided into working groups on Goods, Services and Investment.

In goods market access discussions, both sides gained a better understanding of their respective priorities and agreed to continue detailed market access negotiations at the next round. Good progress was achieved on the chapter on Trade in Goods.

Useful progress was made on services, with Australia and India agreeing to work towards an exchange of initial requests/offers intersessionally. A number of further provisions were agreed on the services text. Agreement on the structural basis for the Investment chapter was also reached during the round.

As some Indian leads were unable to attend the fifth round, both sides agreed to engage intersessionally on rules of origin, legal, customs procedures, technical barriers to trade (TBT), and sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) issues.

The dates for the sixth round will be set later in the year.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade encourages interested parties to lodge a submission on the Australia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement.
