WTO Doha Round Bulletin - Special Release
Week ending 13 August 2004 (Issue 2004/26)
This bulletin, summarising key WTO Doha Round-related activities, is issued by the Office of Trade Negotiations, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Officials refine negotiating positions
The WTO is in summer recess until 31 August and Australian officials are using this time to undertake technical work necessary for the commencement of the modalities negotiations on agriculture, non-agricultural market access and services. Australia will also work with others, including our Cairns Group partners, in the lead-up to and following the resumption of the negotiations. Australian domestic consultations are also expected to take place over the next few months.
Officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts and Treasury met with non-government organisations, State Government and members of the Australian Services Roundtable this week in Sydney. Consultations in other State and Territory capitals will take place over the next few months.
WTO Advisory Group holds its eighth meeting
Mr Vaile briefed Members of the Government’s WTO Advisory Group on 4 August, updating the group on the Geneva negotiations and the scope and content of the July Framework Package. The WTO Advisory Group is comprised of representatives from the business, industry, academia and non-government organisations. This was the eighth meeting since Mr Vaile established the consultative group in April 2001 to provide expert views to the Minister on WTO related issues of concern to the community. The Group also serves as a valuable means of accessing new ideas and approaches to addressing trade policy issues surrounding Australia's involvement with the WTO.
