Japan FTA delivers export boom and another tariff cut

Tariffs under the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement were cut for the fourth time on 1 April 2017. “These tariff cuts continue to give Australian exporters a competitive edge in Japan, our second biggest trading partner” Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Steven Ciobo announced earlier this week.

One year to go to Games worth around $2 billion

The Commonwealth Games will be the biggest international sporting event staged in Australia for a decade and the largest ever hosted by the Gold Coast, Minister Ciobo said this week. The Games are expected to provide a significant economic impact, worth an estimated $2 billion.

The balance on goods and services trade in February 2017 was a surplus of $3.6 billion, an increase of $2.1 billion on the surplus in January 2017 and the second highest trade surplus ever.

Visit to build closer links with Vietnam

Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Keith Pitt is visiting Vietnam this week to promote commercial ties with one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia. Minister Pitt will also hold talks with senior government and business representatives to explore further trade and investment opportunities for Australian companies.

Between 2014 and 2016 Australian exports to Japan of fresh table grapes increased 5,186.8 per cent to $30.7 million, carrot exports increased 500.2 per cent to $3.4 million and fresh or chilled beef exports increased by 22.5 per cent to almost $1.1 billion.
