Building confidence in cyberspace through the development of a regional cyber points of contact directory

20 May 2019

Australia and Malaysia’s proposal for a regional cyber points of contact directory is one step closer to formalisation following the in-principle endorsement of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Intersessional Meeting on Security of and in the Use of ICTs, held in Singapore on 28-29 March 2019.

The directory is a simple, practical and voluntary confidence building measure that will consist of the relevant cyber contacts from participating ARF member countries. The directory will provide a means of direct communication to prevent miscalculation and escalation, as well as manage potential responses in the event of cyber security incidents with the potential to impact regional security. The development of the directory was identified as a key action item in Australia’s International Cyber Engagement Strategy.

The directory proposal will now proceed through the broader ARF approval process.
