It started with a trickle… Steve FitzGerald, First Ambassador to China

Let us remind ourselves of what Australia-China people-to-people relations looked like just over 40 years ago.

The Australia-China Council’s origins lie in Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser and Foreign Minister Andrew Peacock’s visit to China in June 1976. It was then Ambassador Dr Stephen FitzGerald who was responsible for introducing them to what he called “the real China”.
