Project Description

Asha Delhi has long been concerned about young people in the slums not reaching their full potential and not breaking out of an intergenerational cycle of poverty. School enrolment in the slums has dramatically improved, but many children drop out well before finishing high school. Parents have not had the money to pay for books, tuition fees or college travel expenses. For those who have managed to finish school, the quality of education received and the lack of guidance or career counselling at poorly resourced schools has left them ill-prepared for Delhi’s competitive job market. Barriers to academic success include the disturbances children face when trying to study, noise, erratic electricity and water supply, loud music, and lack of privacy in the slums. All in all, social attitudes, lack of awareness about the opportunities in education, poor living conditions and financial restrictions have combined to exclude children of the urban poor from higher education.
