The business and consumer sectors of Australia and India are about to grow even closer as Australian and Indian counterparts cooperate on a new consumer protection initiative. This project will support India in its work to establish a new consumer protection agency. Australian experts from national and state regulators and the University of Sydney will work with an Indian team to help shape a regulatory agency skilled and equipped for a future economy.
India and Australia recognise consumer welfare and protection as central to economic growth and efficiency. Our two countries are on the cusp of a transformation to increase bilateral trade, investment and regulatory cooperation. The Australian team, drawn from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and State agencies, will interact with Indian and international experts on a project led by a former Secretary to the Government of India to support the Indian Ministry for Consumer Affairs. The project, involving workshops in India and secondments in Australia embedding Indian staff with Australian counterparts, will position Australian agencies as premier partners with India in its aspirations to further strengthen consumer protection systems and form an effective new agency that is deeply engaged with business, consumers and international fora.
