Developing Indo-Australian Collaboration for Sustainable Mining in India

Organisation: Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University)

Sector: Science, Technology and Innovation

AIC Priority Area: Lifting outcomes in India Economic Strategy sector

Project description

India’s demand for coal, copper, gold is forecast to grow yearly over 5% to 2035, 90% of which will be met by imports. India’s own mining sector is underdeveloped and stagnant at 2.5%. Given the scale and growth need, there is huge demand for open cut and underground mining in India resulting in growing concerns for environmental, social and safety issues. Australia has enviable experience and know-how in environment-friendly mining, mineral resources extraction, management of environment impact, mine-water, mine-revegetation and rehabilitation. Moreover, Australia’s experience in managing relationship among mining companies, state and federal governments, local councils and local communities including traditional landowners can vastly assist India’s mining industries to grow sustainably.
