Project description

Surf lifesaving organisations play an important role in keeping our beaches safe, preventing drownings and rescuing people.

From 1983 to 1988 Australian Surf Lifesaving, the undisputed world leader in this voluntary service played a crucial role in successfully introducing surf lifesaving to Japan by Australia-Japan Foundation. The objective for this project is to establish a “Patrol Competition” in Japan based on the Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) format. By establishing regular “Patrol Competitions” in Japan we can better serve the communities of both countries for safer beaches. In Patrol Competitions, teams of six lifesavers compete using their knowledge and skills of four categories (physical skills, theory, resuscitation, scenarios) necessary for surf patrolling. Patrol Competitions target knowledge and techniques for competence of beach management, maintaining vigilance and measures to be taken in emergencies, which are much needed in Japan.

The project involves inviting officials accredited by SLSA to Japan to hold a seminar on Australian Patrol Competitions. The project also provides opportunities for Australian and Japanese young lifesavers to participate in Patrol Competitions in both countries as exchange programs.

This program promotes mutual understanding and friendship between Australian and Japanese lifesavers who share a common interest in saving lives.
