Project Description

'One Road' comprises striking original artworks painted by Indigenous Australian artists, interspersed with vivid photographs of the artists and their country. The exhibition arose out of the Canning Stock Route project. The paintings tell individual and collective stories of family, culture and connection to country, set against the unique setting of the Australian desert. The exhibition was developed with full participation and collaboration of the artists and storytellers, which makes it, first and foremost, a collection of 'first voices'.

The involvement of the artists is central to the Museum's commitment to Indigenous participation, providing an opportunity for the Japanese audience to gain a broader understanding of Indigenous culture. Four Indigenous artists from the Western Desert will travel to Japan in November 2016 to participate in public program activities to coincide with the One Road exhibition at Ichihara Lakeside Museum as well as visiting Australia House in Echigo-Tsumari. The presence of the artists for public programming opportunities offers a rare chance for Japanese audiences to gain a broader understanding of Indigenous culture.
