Mental Health First Aid training and simulated assessment in Japan

Project Summary

28 August 2018

Sector: Health

Country location: Australia, Japan

Grantee: The University of Sydney

Project description

Mental illness is prevalent in Australia and Japan and mental health stigma remains a challenge in both countries. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training teaches participants how to respond to mental health problems/crises and non-judgmentally communicate with people experiencing mental health problems/crises until appropriate professional treatment is received. MHFA training is a compulsory component of the Pharmacy Curriculum at The University of Sydney, where novel, post-training assessment methods using simulated-patients have been developed. This project will involve delivering and implementing MHFA training for healthcare students at The University of Sydney, Teikyo University and Kyushu University. Cross-country teaching and research between Australia and Japan will strengthen the evidence base in both countries. This project will allow Australia and Japan to share expertise and build capacity in relation to the mental health education of healthcare students.
