Fijian girls get into rugby

27 July 2016

Excitement is building for the Fijian men’s and women’s Rugby Sevens teams competing at the Rio Olympics. As rugby fever sweeps the country, more and more Fijian kids are getting the chance to play through Australian sport for development.

The Get Into Rugby program offers a modified version of the sport that is encouraging girls and children of all ages and sizes to play. By playing rugby in a safe and enjoyable way the program is challenging gender norms and including children who have traditionally been left out.

Australia is working with nine sporting organisations to deliver rugby programs like this one in Fiji, which are making real improvements to the health and wellbeing of Fijian children.
