The global reach of F1 races on television and online is vast, and Mark Webber and Daniel Riccardo are drivers, they are also ambassadors, for the sport and Australia. They demonstrate the values of sport – competition, teamwork and fair play – as well as our values as a nation.

Australia is a world leader in sports diplomacy, so it was fitting the 2016 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne recently played host to a trackside Sports Diplomacy Masterclass.

The Masterclass, held in March 2016, was a joint effort between the Consular Corps of Melbourne, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, Melbourne University and Bond University. It brought together international racing legend, Sir Jackie Stewart – who delivering the keynote speech – with academics, diplomats and politicians to discuss the importance of sport as both a tool for soft diplomacy and for community development.
