Professional Services Mutual Recognition Unit

Professional services are an increasingly important component of Australia’s export economy. In 2015, Australia’s Professional Services exports accounted for $5.2 billion. 1

However, without international authority to practise their profession, our accountants, architects, engineers, lawyers, physiotherapists, vets, teachers and others are often unable to provide their services to international clients, or to Australian clients with international operations.

To increase market access for Australian professionals overseas, the Professional Services Mutual Recognition Unit provides direct assistance to Australian professional associations and regulators in both addressing behind the border (non-tariff) barriers, and in negotiating the international recognition of Australian qualifications and licencing.

Resolving behind the border issues and the successful conclusion of mutual recognition agreements will create new opportunities to export professional services, increase the value of Australian qualifications for international students, and raise the international profile of Australian professionals.
