Expo 2020 Dubai Update
With less than 18 months to go before the opening of Expo 2020, developments are taking place across a number of key areas. Almost every country in the world will be participating with 193 countries now confirmed.
The Expo site is taking shape with construction on the three Thematic Districts that form the core of the Expo site now complete.
The Mobility Pavilion explores human progress through the physical and digital from ancient exploration to artificial intelligence. The Australian Pavilion will be located opposite the Mobility Pavilion.
The Opportunity Pavilion, designed by Australia-based Cox Architecture, aims to transform millions of visitors into individual forces of change.
The Sustainability Pavilion explores the potential for buildings to be self-sustaining in water and energy, by using innovative combinations of technologies to harvest solar power and water from the air. It will also be a key part of Expo 2020’s legacy, as a children and science centre.
The 438 hectare site will be home to country pavilions featuring interactive exhibits, live entertainment and meeting spaces. Several pavilions have already announced their innovative designs including most recent announcements from Belgium, Monaco and China.
The ticket prices for Expo 2020 have been released, ranging from 120 AED (1 day) to 260 AED (3 day) passes. Visitors will also have the option to purchase season or monthly passes. Tickets will be available to the public starting April 2020.
Organisers have also released updated visitor profile analytics. Of the anticipated 25 million visits, 70 per cent will come from outside the UAE including:
- 23 per cent from South Asia
- 17 per cent from GCC
- 15 per cent from Western Europe
- 11 per cent from East Asia
Welcome the Future Expo 2020
The Expo Organising Committee has launched its global marketing campaign, ‘Welcome the Future’. The campaign celebrates humanity’s achievements and calls on the world to come together to create a better future. Building on Expo 2020’s theme, ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, the campaign encourages everyone to make a positive contribution.
As part of the global marketing campaign, Expo 2020 has appointed professional footballer, Lionel Messi as Global Ambassador. The United Nations SDG advocate and Global Goodwill UNICEF ambassador features in a 60-second film with the unifying message, “The World Is Better When We Act Together”. Shot in the UAE, India, UK and Kenya, the video emphasises how Expo 2020 will break down geographic barriers and bring everyone together.
Australian Pavilion Update
The Australian Pavilion, set in the Mobility district, will be the focal point of Australia’s participation in Expo 2020. From the pavilion design to the events program, Australia continues to make significant progress in the lead up to October 2020.
Australian Pavilion Website
The official website for the Australian Pavilion is now live. The website will feature the latest Expo 2020 and Australian Pavilion news, updates and announcements. Visitors are encouraged to visit the website for regular updates.
In January, the pavilion design was tendered out for completion and construction by a UAE-based Design, Build and Maintain Contractor. We are pleased to announce that Al Shafar Interiors, a subsidiary of the ASGC group, has been appointed. Pavilion site preparation and construction is expected to be carried out from July 2019 to January 2020. We anticipate launching the pavilion design in the second half of this year.
We have begun work on our strategically targeted business program. The program will include Austrade-led missions, commonwealth-led events, and events hosted by our Major Partners (states and territories) and Sponsors (corporates and institutions).
Events will be designed around key priority sectors:
- Agribusiness and food
- International health
- Major infrastructure including sustainable urban development and smart cities
- Services and technology
- Energy and resources
- Defence, space and advanced manufacturing
- Creative industries
The Expo Organising Committee has emphasised the importance of collaboration and partnership. The Australian Pavilion program will feature events that promote pavilion to pavilion and multilateral collaboration. These events will align with our key priority sectors and the Expo Organising Committee’s thematic weeks which are currently under development.
As the Expo site begins to take shape, Australia’s Commissioner General for Expo 2020 Dubai, Justin McGowan has hosted a number of visits from various state and territory delegations.
On 7 April, the Queensland Premier visited the Expo site with the Commissioner General and members of the Expo Organising Committee. The Premier shared ideas and lessons learned from hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
From 29 March to 24 April, a delegation from the Western Australia Legislative Assembly visited the UAE to further enhance the trade relationship between the two countries. The delegation visited the Expo site and met with the Expo Organising Committee.

Cultural Program Update
The development of the Australian Pavilion cultural program is currently underway. An EOI calling for submissions from artists and creative arts companies closed on 29 March 2019. Open for five weeks, the EOI attracted strong interest. Responses are currently being assessed by the cultural program manager, Jacqui Bonner Marketing + Management. The final cultural program will be designed to entertain visitors, increase awareness of the diversity and depth of Australia’s performing artists and celebrate the richness of Indigenous arts and culture on a global platform. We also encourage major Australian performers and artists to consider a stopover in Dubai during Expo 2020.
Australian Cultural Diplomacy Grants Program (ACDGP)
The ACDGP round is now open and closes 5 July 2019. The ACDGP encourages building people-to-people links while promoting Australia’s economic, artistic and cultural assets to an international audience. This is a unique opportunity for interested parties to seek additional funding to participate at Expo 2020.

Expo 2020 Innovation Impact Grant Programme
We are excited to announce that three Australian businesses were shortlisted as finalists for the 4th round of the Expo Live programme. The grant programme recognises and supports the work of businesses and initiatives designed to advance the pace of progress and inspire a more inclusive and prosperous future. Live presentations from the shortlisted finalists took place in Dubai from 30 April to 2 May.
AgUnity, Conpago and My Disability Matters were recognised for their innovative solutions to agriculture, healthcare and community development.
