Launch of public consultations on Geographical Indications: call for submissions
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Simon Birmingham has launched a public consultations process on Geographical Indications as part of negotiations to secure an ambitious and comprehensive free trade agreement with the European Union. Australian producers and businesses should lodge their submissions on the EU’s proposed list of protected terms by 13 November 2019.

Visit to Korea to promote Australian exports
Minister Birmingham visited Korea last week to promote export opportunities and advance the strong economic relationship underpinned by the Korea-Australia Free Trade Agreement. Korea is Australia’s fourth-largest trading partner and one of our largest export markets, with exports of Australian goods and services totaling more than $24 billion last year.

Record trade surplus for Australia
New data released from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that Australia posted a record trade surplus of close to $50 billion for the 2018-19 financial year and a record monthly trade surplus of just over $8 billion (seasonally adjusted) in June.

Samoa ratifies PACER Plus Agreement
The Australian Government has welcomed Samoa's ratification of the Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations Plus as a major step toward bringing the agreement into force and delivering closer economic integration across the region. Samoa is the first of the Pacific Island nations, and the third country overall, to ratify the agreement.

OECD indicators point to stable growth momentum
The OECD has reported that the composite leading indicators it uses to anticipate turning points in economic activity have pointed to stable growth momentum in the OECD area for the second month in a row. The indicators continue to point to easing growth momentum in the United States, Germany and the euro area as whole. Among major emerging economies, China’s indicators suggest stable growth momentum in its industrial sector, despite trade tensions adding uncertainty.
