New initiative to assist Australian businesses in China
Ministers Robb and Billson announced a ground breaking opportunity for Australian businesses to access new markets in China. Representatives from some of China’s most influential online platforms will attend a series of Austrade seminars providing first-hand perspectives on China’s internet shopping revolution.
Australia-Singapore comprehensive strategic partnership
PM Abbott has strengthened ties with Singapore this week with a comprehensive strategic partnership that will see increased defence and economic cooperation. Australia and Singapore agreed to review the 2003 Singapore-Australia FTA and highlighted the desire to increase Singaporean investment in Australia.
Release of Australia’s aid for trade investments strategy
Ministers Bishop and Robb released the ‘Strategy for Australia’s Aid for Trade Investments’ this week. Priority areas include women’s economic empowerment, infrastructure connectivity, and private sector development. By 2020, 20% of Australia’s aid budget will be dedicated to aid for trade.
WTO: Reducing trade costs for growth
The heads of major international agencies agreed that reducing trade costs through initiatives such as the WTO’s Trade Facilitation Agreement will go a long way to helping poorer countries reap the benefits of the global trading system, at the 5th Global Review of Aid for Trade.
WTO: Behind good trade policies is good research
WTO DG Azevêdo, at the 4th annual WTO/World Bank/IMF Trade Workshop this week, highlighted the link between good research, trade policy and growth. Azevêdo said “our three organisations are dedicated to creating a strong and more stable economy…We can’t do any of that without the research…”.
