Australia forges stronger tourism ties with China
Australia’s tourism partnership with China has been further strengthened with the signing of an updated MoU, and an announcement by Prime Minister Turnbull that 2017 will be the Australia-China Year of Tourism. This is a significant boost for our tourism industry, with the Chinese tourism market expected to be worth more than $13b by 2020.
Continuing strong growth for Australian wine exports
Australian wine exports continue to experience strong growth according to Wine Australia’s latest Export Report. From April 2015 to March 2016, the report highlights that the value of exports grew 13%, driven primarily by an increased demand for premium wines with solid growth in the three North Asia markets with FTAs - Japan, South Korea and China.
A healthy trading system requires progress and engagement at all levels
The need to free up international trade and a greater integration in value chains to ensure a healthy trading system has been emphasised by WTO DG, Roberto Azevêdo, during the Inter-Pacific Bar Association meeting in Malaysia. An activist approach is recommended where trade restrictive measures are removed and newly reached agreements are entered into force.
Financing solutions for small business an advantage for Australian companies
A key barrier for advancing trade development in Australia is the difficulty for SMEs in obtaining finance to pursue export opportunities, the Export Council of Australia (ECA) reports. The ECA draws attention to Efic’s new Small Business Export Loan, which addresses this issue by providing small exporters financial support when their bank is unable to assist, helping them grow globally.
Australians take the humble hot chip to Pakistan
A craving for healthier chips and fire-grilled burgers has seen the Australian take-away brand, Cone Heads, take off in Pakistan. Over 30 stores are expected, satisfying growing appetites. Pakistan is a large country, with a young and fast growing population and middle class which offers a number of business opportunities, brand owner Gary Katos said.
AWIGB: Motivations and barriers to internationalisation
The Australian Women in Global Business (AWIGB) in collaboration with the University of Melbourne are undertaking a research survey to examine the experiences of international businesswomen who have engaged with overseas markets. Australian businesswomen are invited to partake in the survey with results used to help influence government policy.
Ultra-low gluten barley beer introduced in Germany
The world’s first ultra-low gluten barley beer has been produced in Germany thanks to a product called ‘Kebari barley’, created by Australia’s CSIRO scientists. The grain’s low gluten levels means it meets the WHO’s gluten-free classification, used in Germany. CSIRO is also working on other low gluten level products including cereals and pasta.
