GRANTS

Most of the Council's resources during the reporting period were dedicated to on-going programs. Core programs, as outlined earlier in the report, included support for Australian Studies activities, exchanges and study programs such as Young Scholars in China and the China-Australia Electronic Information Centre.

Article 9 of the Order-in-Council establishing the Australia-China Council empowers the Council to make grants and loans for the purpose of promoting Australia-China relations. Following a review of its grants policy in 1997 the Council agreed that worthwhile grant applications should continue to be accepted for consideration on an ad hoc basis. This practice was reaffirmed under the Council's 1999-2002 strategic plan. During the reporting period the Council considered funding proposals for activities relevant to its overall objectives and some key project areas such as culture. Grants awarded during the reporting period have been included in relevant areas of this report and/or under the financial statement.
