Initially called the East Asia Analytical Unit, the Economic Analytical
Unit was established in 1990 as the main agency within the Australian
Government responsible for publishing analyses of major economic and political
issues in Asia and other emerging markets. In 1999, the Unit's research
scope was expanded to include important emerging market issues outside East
Asia, so in November 2001, it was renamed the Economic Analytical Unit.
Part of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, to date the EAU has
released 27 reports on major issues related to Australia's trade and
investment policy interests.
Staffed with seven professionals, the EAU also contracts a range of
consultants with specific areas of expertise. It draws on a wide range of data
and information sources, including Australia' s diplomatic and trade missions
around the world.
The Unit produces reports and briefing papers intended to assist analysts
and decision makers in business, the Australian Government and the academic
community.
