Public diplomacy

Public diplomacy is the diplomacy Australia engages in beyond traditional government-to-government engagement. It is about building people-to-people links and sustaining an extensive network of relationships with other countries. It advances Australia’s interests through strengthening our influence and reputation.

By building relationships outside of governments with a wide range of stakeholders that include academia, cultural institutions, think tanks, NGOs and media, we can help others to understand more about Australia and our values. This fosters mutual understanding, builds trust, increases our ability to influence and persuade, and helps to achieve foreign, trade and development policy objectives.
