About us

The Australia-Indonesia Institute (AII) is dedicated to fostering mutual understanding and driving deeper people-to-people engagement between Australia and Indonesia. Established in 1989 by the Australian Government, the AII champions initiatives that strengthen personal, institutional and cultural ties across a diverse range of sectors, including: education and research, business, media, religion and society, the arts, youth and sport, and community development.

Our flagship programs include the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange and Australia-Indonesia Muslim Exchange Programs, Elizabeth O’Neill Journalism Award, Senior Editors Program, Indonesian Studies Awards and BRIDGE School Partnerships Program. In addition, the AII runs an annual Grants Program, supporting projects that develop partnerships in areas of shared interest for Australia and Indonesia.

The AII is guided by an advisory board comprised of prominent figures from the business, academic, arts, media and diplomacy sectors. The AII Board sets the strategic direction for AII programs and activities, ensuring they continue to add breadth, depth and vigour to our long-term relationship with Indonesia.
