Summary of publication

The purpose of this document is to describe the social and gendered impacts of mining in Mongolia. The report was requested by DFAT due to the economic and political changes since the Australia Mongolia Extractives Program (AMEP) document was written in 2012.

When the AMEP analysis was undertaken in 2012 Mongolia was undergoing rapid economic growth based on its vast minerals wealth. However, a fall in commodity prices, coupled with government instability has produced a slowdown of foreign direct investment and a slump in economic growth. Therefore, the social and gendered impacts of mining in Mongolia have shifted since the original analysis done as part of the AMEP design. This document builds on the earlier analysis and adds new observations that are relevant to affected communities and groups. Recommendations for mainstreaming gender in the new economic and political environment are made in each section of the report.
