Secretariat of the Pacific Community Partnership—Food security in the Pacific and East Timor and its vulnerability for climate change

Summary

This document is a joint report on the adequacy, availability, stability, utilisation, safety and nutrition of food in 15 Pacific countries and projected impacts of climate change on food security.

Description

This document is a Joint Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) report for the Australian Government Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency on the adequacy, availability, stability, utilisation, safety and nutrition of food in 15 Pacific countries and projected impacts of climate change on food security.

The report provides details, analysis and findings on food security in the Pacific in the areas of:

  • food production and productivity
  • food consumption
  • health and nutrition
  • markets and trade
  • environmental issues
  • socio-economic and political issues.

It provides Pacific climate change projections and the likely impact on food security in the Pacific. It includes regional, national and donor responses and recommends options for future food security assistance. The report finds that there is a need to improve climate resilience in Pacific food production systems, especially in the smaller atoll countries where the challenge is greatest. Options range from developing more productive and sustainable agriculture and fisheries systems, through measures along the food supply chain from farm to market.
