Support for Refugees and host communities in Bangladesh

Approximately 700,000 Rohingya people fled across the border to Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh following violence in Myanmar's Rakhine State in August 2017. Most of these refugees remain dependent on humanitarian support, with no legal status or right to work.

Australia is one of the largest donors providing life-saving assistance to people in need, including Rohingya refugees and their host communities in Bangladesh (reinforced in an Australian pledge at the 2023 Global Refugee Forum).

Australia's support is flexible and committed over several years, enabling our partners to adapt and respond effectively as needs evolve. It includes food, water and shelter, as well as essential education and health services.

We support people with disability in the camps through 'accessibility audits' to help ensure sites are disability-friendly. We also support the appointment of people with disability as community leaders to ensure they are meaningfully included in decisions that affect their communities.
