Overview

Australian volunteers support the capacity of organisations in partner countries to deliver effective and sustainable development outcomes focused on economic growth and poverty reduction and advance Australia's reputation and relationships in partner countries. The Australian Volunteers program is part of the Australian Government's people-to-people program portfolio, connecting Australians to Australia's aid program.

Volunteer placements in Africa are aligned with areas of priority for the Australian Government in Africa – including agricultural productivity, extractives, private sector development, governance and public policy, women's empowerment and responding to humanitarian crises and needs.

From 2018-2022, Australia has supported 107 volunteers working in 44 partner organisations in Africa. Volunteers are currently placed in a range of organisations in South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho and Tanzania. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteers worked remotely from Australia, to continue supporting organisations in Africa.
