Interactive dialogue with Special Rapporteur on the situation in Myanmar

Australian Statement
We thank the Special Rapporteur for his update.
Australia has grave concerns about the military coup in Myanmar and condemns the deadly violence across the country.
The use of lethal force against civilians peacefully protesting is unacceptable and indefensible. We again strongly urge Myanmar’s security forces to exercise restraint and refrain from violence. We extend our condolences to the bereaved families.
We call for an end to violations of freedom of expression and association, including by lifting of internet restrictions.
We are deeply concerned by the harassment, arrest and detention of political leaders, civil society activists, civil servants, journalists and others. We continue to call for the immediate release of Australian Professor Sean Turnell, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint and all others arbitrarily detained.
Australia remains seriously concerned by humanitarian crises and ongoing human rights violations against the Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar. We again call for adherence to international human rights law, including in relation to gender-based violence. We renew our call for unimpeded humanitarian access across Myanmar.
Australia stands with the people of Myanmar in their pursuit of democracy and we reiterate our call for the Myanmar military to engage in dialogue. Australia will continue to play a constructive role, including in consultation with international partners, particularly ASEAN.
