47th Session of the Human Rights Council
Australia thanks the High Commissioner for her report.
Australia is strongly committed to the fight against systemic racism and upholding the rule of law, including through action by this Council and its mechanisms. We reject racism in all its forms, wherever it occurs, and are proud of our diverse and cohesive society.
Australia shared the international outrage over the tragic death of George Floyd, which globalised the Black Lives Matter movement and led to a renewed international effort to address systemic racism.
We welcome the leadership that the United States has shown in openly confronting this issue and prioritising efforts to combat racism and racial discrimination both domestically and in the international arena, including through its actions at the Human Rights Council.
We encourage all states to take a comprehensive approach in responding to racism, including by ensuring that security forces are held accountable for the excessive use of force.
We would welcome the High Commissioner’s views on how the transformative four-point agenda for racial justice and equality, set out in this report, might differ in its implementation in nations with Indigenous Peoples, minorities or other marginalised racial groups?
