47th Session of the Human Rights Council

National Statement on the Situation in Myanmar during the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur, 7 July 2021

Australian Statement

Australia thanks the Special Rapporteur for his troubling, but important, update on the situation in Myanmar.

We welcome this Interactive Dialogue as a vital opportunity for the Council to discuss the concerning human rights situation in Myanmar.

We remain gravely concerned about the deadly violence being perpetrated against the people of Myanmar, and urgently call on the regime to end the violence and release all those arbitrarily detained.

We are very concerned about reports of spreading conflict and the resulting civilian casualties, and call on the regime to allow safe, unimpeded access and to provide protection for humanitarian assistance.

We welcome ASEAN's efforts to chart a course out of this crisis and look forward to the announcement of a Special Envoy. We are pleased to support ASEAN's commitment to deliver humanitarian assistance in Myanmar.

Australia is steadfast in our support of the people of Myanmar. We call on the regime to engage in inclusive dialogue and return Myanmar to the path of democracy.

We ask Mr Andrews how can states best support the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation in Myanmar?
