Australian Statement

Australia thanks the High Commissioner for her presentation and welcomes her report. As a member of the core group of resolution 45/28, Australia supports strengthened linkages between the work of the Council and the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.

Australia’s commitment to the WPS agenda was reasserted through our second National Action Plan. This Plan promotes women’s meaningful participation, reduction in sexual and gender-based violence, human security, leadership and accountability, through engagement with civil society and international bodies such as this Council.

Women’s and girls’ human rights are central to the WPS agenda and the stability of our countries. We welcome the Council’s increased attention to the rights of women and girls in conflict and post-conflict situations. This is key to strengthening the implementation of the WPS agenda.

Responding to gender-based violence and ensuring the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls, including through access to services, in conflict and post-conflict situations must be central to our responses.

Madame High Commissioner, we welcome your views on how the Council can support country mandates to mainstream sexual and reproductive health and rights in their work?
