Australian Statement

Australia has for decades supported and contributed to strengthening the international human rights system.

As we meet at the beginning of 2022, this network of norms and institutions is under great strain in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s unprovoked and illegal attack on Ukraine and its people.

Australia recognises the valuable contribution of civil society, human rights defenders, national human rights institutions and the media in the protection and promotion of freedom of expression.

We stand with the many brave Ukrainian citizens, journalists and organisations who are exposing Russia’s egregious conduct.

Australia is committed to responding to serious human rights abuses or violations against journalists and media workers globally. We are particularly concerned regarding reports of targeting of journalists and media freedom in Myanmar, Afghanistan and Belarus.

Australia remains deeply concerned by China's continuing erosion of Hong Kong's rights and freedoms, including its undermining of press freedom.

Australia is deeply concerned by reports of attacks on human rights and political freedoms by the Nicaraguan Government. We call for the restoration of democracy given the 7 November 2021 Presidential elections lacked freedom, fairness, and transparency.
