Human Rights Council – 49th session
General Debate
21 March 2022
Australian Statement
Australia expresses its grave concern for the human rights of the people of Ukraine arising from the illegal and unprovoked attack by Russia. The invasion is a gross violation of international law, including the Charter of the United Nations.
Russia’s war on Ukraine is exacting a catastrophic humanitarian toll. Russia must uphold its obligations under international humanitarian law.
Australia has worked closely with our partners to impose far-reaching sanctions to inflict heavy costs on those in Russia and Belarus who bear responsibility or hold levers of power.
We are appalled by the mass executions, on 12 March, in Saudi Arabia. Australia reiterates its long-standing opposition to the death penalty. We call on retentionist states to abolish the practice.
Australia remains concerned for the human rights situation of women and girls in Afghanistan.
Australia is alarmed by violations and abuses of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Myanmar, Iran, and Syria. We call on relevant parties to protect human rights, as well as engage with the UN and its mechanisms in good faith.
Credible reports of severe human rights abuses and violations against Uyghurs and other minorities in Xinjiang continue. It is critical the High Commissioner’s visit to Xinjiang is unfettered and that the Office’s assessment of allegations of serious human rights violations is released without delay.
Australia is also concerned by the attacks on human rights and political freedom in Belarus, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. We continue to call for an end to restrictions on human rights defenders, journalists, and protestors.
Australia calls on all member states to protect, respect and promote human rights, including in crisis.
