Human Rights Council – 49th session

Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Iran

17 March 2022

Australian Statement

Australia thanks the Special Rapporteur for his update on the human rights situation in Iran and remains gravely concerned.

Iran’s ongoing use of the death penalty, including against juvenile offenders, is contrary to its international treaty obligations. Australia opposes the death penalty in all circumstances and urges Iran to enact a moratorium.

We are deeply troubled by reports of unfair trials, arbitrary detention – including as a means to put pressure on other governments – and the targeting of human rights defenders and lawyers. We call on Iran to ensure the independence of its judicial system, due process and access to a freely chosen lawyer.

Australia decries the entrenched discrimination faced by women and girls and calls on Iran to immediately end violence against women, child marriage and the persecution of those who advocate for the rights of women and girls. We remain deeply concerned by the discrimination and intimidation experienced by ethnic and religious minorities and LGBTI persons. We urge Iran to protect the rights of all individuals.

With reference to the Special Rapporteur’s report, what can states do to facilitate accountability for events that have thus far been met with persistent impunity?
